Gala FAQ
Everything you need to know about swimming galas — especially if it's your family's first competition.
What is a gala?
A gala (or swimming meet) is a competition where swimmers race against others in their age group and events. It is a chance to test skills, achieve personal-best times and represent the club.
How do I enter a gala?
Entries are coordinated by the club. When a gala is open for entries you will be notified via the Sport Member app or by your coach, along with the closing date and cost per event.
What are qualifying times?
Some galas (County, Regional and licensed Open meets) require swimmers to have achieved a minimum time — a "qualifying time" or QT — in an event before they can enter.
What should my swimmer wear and bring?
At galas we ask that swimmers have, as a minimum, a Club T-shirt and Club cap. Bring at least two towels, goggles (plus a spare), poolside clothing to stay warm, plenty of water and healthy snacks, and any heat sheet provided.
What is "warm-up" and what time should we arrive?
Every gala starts with a warm-up session before racing. Arrival and warm-up times are listed on the meet information sheet — please aim to arrive in good time so your swimmer is ready.
Can parents watch?
Yes — spectators are usually welcome, though some venues charge a small admission and sell programmes. Poolside is reserved for swimmers, coaches and officials only.
How can I help as a parent?
Galas rely on volunteers. You can help as a Team Manager, train as a judge or timekeeper, or help the team on the day. Speak to a Club Officer if you would like to get involved.
Still have questions?
Speak to your coach poolside, or get in touch with the club and we'll be happy to help.
